East Staffordshire Borough Council is encouraging residents to start home composting this autumn with a new series of practical tips.
The council will share five weeks of guidance on Facebook and has updated its composting webpage with step-by-step information for people getting started.
The campaign is aimed at residents across the borough, including Burton and Uttoxeter, as gardens are tidied for the colder months.
Turning autumn waste into compost
Fallen leaves, spent plants, hedge trimmings and vegetable peelings are among the materials highlighted in the council's advice.
The authority says home composting can reduce the amount of waste needing treatment elsewhere while producing compost that can be used in vegetable beds, borders and other planting areas.
The weekly tips will cover why autumn is a useful time to begin, what can go in a bin and how to balance different types of material.
Residents will also be shown how to recognise when compost is ready and how to use it in the garden.
Guidance for beginners
The updated webpage explains what can and cannot go in a home compost bin and how to choose a suitable position for it.
It includes videos and links to advice from organisations including Sustainable Staffordshire, the Royal Horticultural Society, Recycle Now, Garden Organic and the Soil Association.
Dennis Fletcher, the council's cabinet member for Environment and Climate Change, said autumn offered plenty of leaves and garden waste to help residents get started.
He encouraged people with no previous composting experience to use the updated guidance and follow the tips over the coming weeks.
Residents can visit the East Staffordshire home-composting page or follow the council on Facebook for the October tips.
