Inset days in 2026/27

Tuesday 1 September 2026 is the council's fixed inset day. The autumn term starts on Wednesday 2 September. Schools choose the other four training days, so the council calendar alone does not show every day your child will be off school.

Academies and faith schools may differ

Academies and other schools not run by the council can choose their own term dates. The council fixes one inset day; schools set the other four. Always confirm term dates and inset days on your school's website before arranging childcare or travel.

Term-time holidays and fines

Only a head teacher can grant leave during term time and only in exceptional circumstances. A first penalty notice is £80 per parent, per child when paid within 21 days, rising to £160 when paid within 28 days. A second notice for the same parent and child within three years is £160, with no lower early-payment rate. Requests for leave go to the school.
