East Staffordshire's new Housing Register has opened for applications, with residents now able to apply through a new online system.
The council-managed register opened on 1 September. Existing applicants who have been invited to re-register can also submit their new application.
Existing applicants may need to re-register
People who have been asked to re-register should apply as soon as possible and no later than 1 December 2026, when the new register is expected to become fully operational.
All applications will be reassessed using each household's current circumstances. Existing priority bands and waiting-list positions will not automatically transfer to the new scheme.
Some applicants may have been told that they do not need to reapply unless their circumstances change. Residents should follow the instructions in the letter or email they have received before starting an application.
How applications will be assessed
The register follows the adoption of a new Housing Allocations Policy. East Staffordshire Borough Council says it is intended to allocate the limited number of available social homes fairly and transparently, prioritising households with the greatest housing need.
Applicants must have a recognised housing need and meet the eligibility and qualification criteria in the policy, including local-connection requirements where they apply.
Being accepted onto the Housing Register does not guarantee an offer of a property. The council says demand for social housing across East Staffordshire continues to exceed the number of homes available.
Councillor Simon Slater, Cabinet Member for Communities and Regulatory Services, encouraged anyone invited to re-register to apply promptly and make sure their information is accurate and up to date.
