Burton Albion Women came from behind to beat Newcastle Town 3-1 away from home on Sunday afternoon. After a goalless first half, the home side took the lead after an hour, but the Brewers responded with three unanswered goals to claim victory.

How the match unfolded

Freya Holman had the first chance after 10 minutes, shooting low and forcing a save from the Town keeper. Five minutes later, her strike from the edge of the box hit the post. Newcastle broke quickly at the other end but Gracie Thompson made a fine save to keep the scores level.

Hajrah Mahmood, making her 100th appearance for the club, almost opened the scoring with 26 minutes gone, her powerful strike flying over the bar from the left side of the box after Holman swept the ball across to her. Captain Shanae Thomas sent a free-kick over the wall but straight into the keeper's arms shortly after.

Before half-time, substitute Leonie Hunt made space for Alana Keary to cross into the box. Holman was almost able to swipe it home, but the Town keeper held on to the ball.

After the restart, Hunt was delivering crosses into the box again, with one fizzed right across the face of goal and out for a goal-kick. Ella Doocey was linking play well in midfield, creating a chance for Holman after 50 minutes. The striker burst forwards but could only drive a shot wide of the post.

Newcastle took the lead after an hour when a neat shot by Edi Darby-Malam found its way into the bottom corner. Just six minutes later, Burton Albion were level. Keary was in the right place to nod home a cross from the right.

With quarter of an hour to go, Holman put the Brewers ahead. A cross from the right floated high into the box and over the keeper, finding the goal. Soon after, with just eight minutes remaining, Grace Adeyinka sealed the victory. An effort from the edge of the box came off the post, and she reacted quickest to slot home the rebound.
